2011 results – 2,145 medals awarded

A total 2,145 medals were awarded this year and preliminary results indicate that France retains its leadership position with 628 medals, followed by Spain (436 medals), Portugal (235 medals), Italy (184), Chile (136), South Africa (78) and Australia (43). The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, event host this year, achieved an outstanding score of 29 medals for one hundred or so entries.

As is customary, less than 1 percent of the 7,386 entries were awarded a Grand Gold Medal. Spain leads the way in this prestigious category with 15 of the highly coveted medals (followed by France with 14 medals and Italy, 11). Entries achieving this ultimate gratification include six wines awarded the ‘Best Wine Trophy’ for the highest score in their category:

• Best Sparkling – Champagne Gallimard Père & Fils, Cuvée de Prestige 2005 (Champagne, France)
• Best White – Terre Cortesi Moncaro, Vigna Novali Classico Riserva Bianco 2007 (Marche, Italy)
• Best Rosé – Château de Berne, Terres de Berne 2010 (Provence, France)
• Best Red – Altavins Viticultors, Domus Pensi 2006 (Catalonia, Spain)
• Best Sweet – Gonzalez Byass, Nectar PX (Andalusia, Spain)
• Best Spirit – Rémy Cointreau, Highland Park 18 Years Old (Scotland, United Kingdom).
