The results - http://www.concoursmondial.com/en/results.html The results of the 2011 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles have just been released. Once again, the competition has revealed critical insight into the latest trends within the world of wine, providing a snapshot of the global industry that is updated annually. A total 7,386 wines and spirits from 49 producer countries competed in Luxembourg from May 6-8 before a hand-picked selection of some of the world’s foremost tasters. Sommeliers, wine buyers, importers, journalists and wine writers – in all 260 wine tasters and 24 spirits tasters representing 40 nationalities – gathered for 3 days to judge this year’s entries. The diverse range both of entries and backgrounds of the tasters themselves is one of the archetypal features of a competition that in just a few years has emerged as a world wine and spirits ‘tasting championship’. A total 2,145 medals were awarded this year and preliminary results indicate that France retains its leadership position with 628 medals, followed by Spain (436 medals), Portugal (235 medals), Italy (184), Chile (136), South Africa (78) and Australia (43). The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, event host this year, achieved an outstanding score of 29 medals for one hundred or so entries. As is customary, less than 1 percent of the 7,386 entries were awarded a Grand Gold Medal. Spain leads the way in this prestigious category with 15 of the highly coveted medals (followed by France with 14 medals and Italy, 11). Entries achieving this ultimate gratification include six wines awarded the ‘Best Wine Trophy’ for the highest score in their category: · Best Sparkling – Champagne Gallimard Père & Fils, Cuvée de Prestige 2005 · (Champagne, France) · Best White – Terre Cortesi Moncaro, Vigna Novali Classico Riserva Bianco 2007 (Marche, Italy) · Best Rosé – Château de Berne, Terres de Berne 2010 (Provence, France) · Best Red – Altavins Viticultors, Domus Pensi 2006 (Catalonia, Spain) · Best Sweet – Gonzalez Byass, Nectar PX (Andalusia, Spain) · Best Spirit – Rémy Cointreau, Highland Park 18 Years Old (Scotland, United Kingdom). The 19th Concours Mondial de Bruxelles will take place on May 4, 5 and More information on www.facebook.com/concoursmondial www.twitter.com/concoursmondial @concoursmondial #cmb2012 International press contact: Frédéric Galtier

Since 2006, the Concours Mondial has decided to broaden its international scope and is organised outside Belgium. Lisbon, Maastricht, Bordeaux, Valencia and Sicily have all provided a prestigious backdrop for the tastings. Luxembourg was this year’s stop. “Our country boasts a long-standing tradition of wine making” says Marc Kuhn. “Organising the 2011 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles in Luxembourg will undoubtedly enable us to showcase the breadth and depth of our range of wines”. The trade-only judging panel gathers together the foremost international experts. It represents almost 40 nationalities and this diversity contributes to the uniqueness of the event.
