Crémant de Luxembourg draws its inimitable sense of place from the northerly location of its vineyards, making it a seductive drink. The appellation is 20 years’ old, an anniversary we will be celebrating at the next Concours Mondial !

The ‘Crémant de Luxembourg’ controlled appellation was established on January 4, 1991. Stated on a rectangular label featured on the back of the bottle, the designation is a state-controlled quality seal that also certifies the wine comes from Luxembourg.

vignesThe designation is only awarded once the Crémant has undergone an analytical assessment at the Wine & Vine Institute’s laboratory. It must also score at least 12 out of 20 in the tasting assessment covering colour, limpidity, smell and flavour conducted by members of the National Luxembourg Wine Brand tasting committee.

In addition to compulsory specifications for sparkling wines, Crémant also has to comply with additional quality criteria such as the must extraction ratio, restricted to 100 l per 150 kg of grapes, and excess CO2 pressure of at least 4 atmospheres after disgorgement. The wine making process is recorded in a compulsory ‘press log book’.

Drawing its inimitable sense of place from the northerly location of its vineyards, Crémant de Luxembourg also reveals the seductive idiosyncrasies imparted by its noble varietal origins, namely Auxerrois, Pinot blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot noir.

To celebrate the anniversary, the Luxembourg stamp office is issuing a commemorative stamp next April or May.
