The city of Guimarães is located in the northern region of Portugal in the ancient province of Minho. Guimarães is the cradle of the Portuguese nation and boasts one of the country’s youngest populations (160,000 inhabitants).
The region’s climate ranges from cold, rainy winters to mild, slightly damp summers with fairly high annual temperature differences due primarily to its location – it is set back a long way from the coast and surrounded by mountains, in the heart of a valley. These unique conditions are conducive to producing Vinho Verde, the only wine of its kind in the world.
Guimarães, whose origins date from the Middle Ages, back to the 10th century, is known as the cradle of the Portuguese nation and identity. Its perfectly preserved historic centre has been listed as a World Heritage site by Unesco since 2001.
