The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles has just released the results of its fourth and final tasting session this year. Focusing on sweet and fortified wines, the session’s 50 judges awarded silver, gold and grand gold medals to wines from 20 different countries.

For the first time in its history, the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles held a dedicated session for sweet and fortified wines, which took place in Marsala, Sicily. The judges’ verdict was unanimous – this specific category most certainly deserves full attention. One noteworthy takeaway was that very sweet wines can still remain perfectly balanced and harmonious, as proven by the international Revelation by Domaine des Forges, in the Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru appellation area, whose sugar content comes in at 256 g/l.

The results underscored the following major trends:

1/ The major international fortified wine regions confirm their international status. The iconic regions that are Port, Madeira, Marsala, Charente and Andalusia all fetched highly impressive scores this year.

2/ The Greek islands, Tuscany, the Loire and Moravia stood out for their ability to produce quality dessert wines.

3/ Interestingly, the wines entered in this session tended to improve with age. Of the 174 medal-winning wines this year, 100 had aged for over 7 years.

About the competition

The Concours Mondial de Bruxelles is an international competition with over 10,000 wines entered by producers to be tasted and judged by a panel of experts. Our experienced judges taste the wines in the competition with one guiding principle, and that is to single out wines of irreproachable quality, with no bias stemming from the label or an appellation’s prestige. The Concours is one of the most significant international events of its kind.
